The Institution Of Marriage
Monday, April 7, 2008
Divorce is rampant in our society today and it seems to be a problem that keeps snowballing.
The Bible states it’s very clear stance on the issue. God wants a man and a woman who have given themselves to each other to remain together forever.
I can’t say I know much about marriage. I’m only 20 years old. I do know that it is a very important commitment you make to your spouse and to God. For this reason, there are very few reasons that people should divorce, but I would rather take a stance of grace than a stance based on fire and brimstone.
What is the object of marriage? I’ve been taught that because of the different ways men and women are “wired,” the main idea is to take away distractions and concerns the male and female may have. Men have extreme sexual needs that can become very distracting, while women have a need to be loved and protected. Through the bond of marriage, the two become one and therefore are to help each other become more like Christ.
Let me repeat that. The two help each other become more like Christ. I can’t say I know of a verse that commands that, but the Bible also states that we must strive to be more like Him each and every day. It goes as far to say that if your hands are causing you to sin, cut them off for it is better to lose a hand than to sin. So why would the institution of marriage not follow the same guidelines? If a spouse becomes lazy and is not willing to contribute to that relationship, does God really look upon the marriage favorably?
And then even if divorce happens, the church still treats them as an outcast. Aren’t we all sinners? Is God’s grace not able to cover this sin? I am not endorsing divorce based on the means of grace, but in the legit cases of it, I would feel that’s God’s decision and not ours. I’m really beginning to despise the politics that Christians play with other Christian’s lives. By their own nature they feel the need to be above others and use every visible sin to attack, destroy and cause division beyond what has already happened because of the divorce.
Divorce is hell. Nobody wants to go through it. As Christians, we have to support each other rather than treating them like lepers. That’s what Jesus would have done.
